Tim B :

How long does it usually take between the time the job search begins and the time that one receives an actual offer?
I’m in Texas, and in the social sciences (geography/urban planning, to be specific), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in December.

You should be searching right now. The average search is taking 6 months right now, sometimes longer. You will increase your chances of finding employment if you place no constraints on location. You can check federal government jobs at: usajobs.gov
Given city and state budgets have been cut nationwide it will be difficult finding something at the government city level. If your college offers a job fair, attend. Make sure you already have a resume completed. Good luck to you! (college professor)

well, hows the economy there. you check with any companies yet?
it;s august, i would stick my feet in the water now. of course, you can’t take anything offered now, but it certainly would not be a bad idea to see if that water is dead so to speak and you might need to relocate.

i know people that have been looking for a job in their field for over a year, just depends no set rule.

When I was job searching for my first job, it took an employer about 2 years to hire me. I started job searching in my junior year of high school. My job hired me, at the end of my first semester in college. I was job searching at normal places that will tale anyone like supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores, mall shops, department stores, hotels, large retail stores, bookstores, and fast-food places. I job searched all throughout the holiday season, going insane looking for a job. Some people make job searching sound so easy, but it’s not.

I’m sure the amount of time it’ll take to get a job depends, on what type of job your looking for and the area you live in. I think I made the record, of the student that searched the longest for a job. Usually supermarkets and restaurants almost never reject college students.
